Garlic is a perennial herbaceous plant that possesses sulfur-containing compounds and allicin, which act as antimicrobial agents. The garlic moth (Dyspessa ulula) is a significant pest and a limiting factor for the productivity of this crop in various regions of Iran, including Hamadan. Apart from causing direct damage in storage, it leads to contamination of garlic shipments and the loss of its export value. Identifying gut-compatible bacteria of this important pest can pave the way for its control through genetic manipulation of these bacteria. In this study, gut-compatible bacteria of the garlic moth were isolated and identified. Bacteria present in the digestive system of this pest, especially species like Serratia marcescens and Lactobacillus plantarum, were found to play a crucial role in pest control. This research represents the first report of the existence of these two bacteria in the digestive system of the garlic moth in Iran and globally. Additionally, the investigations indicate that Lactobacillus plantarum has a higher prevalence compared to Serratia marcescens.
