In order to investigate the effect of various Pythium sp. pseudo-fungi species in causing seed rot and seedling death, 20 isolates of 8 Pythium species including Pythium Group G, P. aphanidermatum, P. deliense, P. ultiumu, Pythium Group F, P. inflatum, P. ostracodes and P. diclinum, collected from different regions of Iran, were studied on three plants including wheat, corn and sugar beet. Pathogenicity tests were conducted on various culture media including CMA, WA and vermiculite mixed with fungus at two ratios of 5 to 1 and 10 to 1. The highest amount of seed rot in sugar beet was caused by P. aphanidermatum (80%) (in vermiculite culture medium at the ratio of 5 to 1) and in corn and wheat in the WA culture medium at a rate of 30% by P. ostracodes. The highest amount of seed rot in corn was observed by P. aphanidermatum in the CMA culture medium (48%). The phenomenon of plant death due to Pythium was observed in wheat and sugar beet in vermiculite media containing inoculum. Thus, the highest severity of seedling death in wheat was caused by P. deliense in the vermiculite medium at the ratio of 5 to 1 and the highest rate of seedling death in sugar beet was observed in P. deliense and P. ultiumu in the media containing vermiculite at ratios of 5 to 1 and 10 to 1, respectively, at a rate of 60%. Finally, no seedling death was observed in corn.
